TEKH lecture on the Fazola Days

5. October 2025.
Fazola Days is an event organized by local professional organizations every September for the general public in honor of the founder of the metallurgy in Miskolc, with various outdoor and indoor programs. Professor János Földessy was invited to this year's event, and he gave a lecture on the critical mineral raw material potential of Northern Hungary (title of the presentation: Our region – rich and poor). Decades of research have yielded many partial results that could bring about a serious economic recovery in the crisis region. Such are the enrichments of the Recsk copper ore, with high Au-Ag content, the germanium ores associated with the Borsod coal, the gold-silver enrichments discovered in many places in Tokaj, or the copper-lead-zinc-barite ores of Rudabánya. Implementation requires money, time, regulation amendments, but above all, common thinking and will.

Cube from germanium metal. One ton of Borsod coal can contain as much germanium as this 72-gram cube. The current price of 72 grams of germanium is approx. 142 thousand forints. (The average germanium content of coal types is much less than this, 9–10 grams / ton, and not all Borsod coal can be extracted with germanium.)
