Selmec workshop for international students

4. April 2025.

More and more foreign students are studying in all majors at the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Engineering (with Hungarian abbreviation: MFK), so it has become important for the continuation of our traditions to involve not only Hungarian but also foreign students in nurturing the student traditions of Selmec.

On 25 March, 5 brave international members of the college participated in a joint program of the TEKH Vocational College and the MFK Student Council, the aim of which was to present the university's almost 300-year-old traditions. As is well known, these traditions are linked to Selmecbánya (in Slovakian: Banská Štiavnica; in German: Schemnitz), the mining industry there and the former Academy.

The discussion focused on the uniforms that today's students wear on ceremonial occasions, the secrets of various badges, the patches on uniforms, the special rules of social gatherings called special evenings, and traditional songs. The most important song of all is the Miner's Anthem, so we first tried to teach the English version of it to the foreign students. This proved to be a very successful experiment, because singing together brought everyone together.

The event was very successful, so our plans include holding a Selmec workshop every semester.

If you don't know the English version of our anthem yet, but would like to listen to it, you can do so by clicking on this link: youtube.com/watch?v=3YheK4Qw5aI
