Geothermal drilling field trip in Nyíregyháza

9. March 2024.

In Hungary and in many parts of the world, companies and city governments are looking at geothermal energy as a green energy alternative, primarily in terms of heating. This is how the Nyíregyháza site of one of the major European toy manufacturers came to be, where Rotaqua Kft. is currently conducting geothermal exploratory drilling. A total of 12 people took part in a tour and field training at this drilling site on February 13 and 20.

In the process, we got to know every little detail of drilling, starting from delivery, through the various service units, and including the drilling equipment itself, which is one of the largest in our country. In addition, we heard about the different drilling techniques, as well as how the given drilling should be documented, geologically described, and who performs which tasks. Of course, we learned that the most and most complicated tasks are when something doesn't go according to plan, but fortunately we saw few examples of this in this drilling. We have also experienced that skilled labour is really valued at all similar drilling, since security of supply cannot be taken as cash at all. At the end of the day, we were able to return home from the family-friendly tour with great experiences.

Thanks to the Faculty for providing the bus, to Attila Kasó, geologist, mining engineer, and geothermal engineer, the project leader, who personally guided us through the workplace on both occasions, and Dr. Gabriella Kovácsné Federer is associate professor, who undertook to help the group.
