A report of our secret agents Samuel Ayipa Arthur and Yasir Aminu Buba from the US Earth Science Webinars

17. October 2023.

The TEKH of the University of Miskolc has long arms extending overseas. In the last week our secret agents Yasir Aminu Buba and Samuel Ayipa Arthur have monitored the Earth Science Week webinars and sent his reports to the TEKH.

The first part of the webinar on 9 October Monday treated a very serious challenge about ’Partnerships Provides Safe Drinking Water to Rural Communities’ as part of the 2023 ESW webinar series. The presentation was by Joseph O. Osumeje and Daniel Eshimiakhe from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria. The webinar briefly discussed how integrated remote sensing and geophysical survey were used to explore groundwater in two communities in order to provide clean and sustainable drinking water for the inhabitants of these communities. The project was successful as boreholes were eventually drilled and tanks were installed to supply the groundwater to the communities.

On Tuesday 10 October the webinar titled ’Drones for Earth Sciences’ as part of the 2023 ESW webinar series was on the agenda. Five different short presentations were delivered by 5 different speakers. All the speakers described how they use drones or other unmanned equipments in their works such as mining, climate change, hazard management, environmental management and geological mapping and modelling.

An interesting lecture was given on 11 October from Photogrammetry: Introduction and Applications in Geoscience and Geoscience Education’. The webinar is basically on the applications of photogrammetry, which is the process of making measurements from photos in different aspects of geosciences such as 2D/3D modelling of geological features, structural dynamics, vibration analysis, risk assessment, digital archiving, virtual field experience, virtual block geological models, and so on.

He has participated in the 13 October 2023 webinar titled ’The Invisible Mine: envisioning the future of mining in Europe’ presented by Vitor Correia, Secretary General, International Raw Materials Observatory as part of the 2023 ESW webinar series. (This Observatory has been created with the active participation of our Faculty in the University of Miskolc). The presenter started by highlighting the change drivers of mining which includes advanced technology, politics and climate change. He then moved to the Europe’s Climate Neutral agenda by 2050. To achieve this, energy transition is necessary and critical raw materials are required for that. However, there are challenges in getting these critical elements which includes political instability, resource nationalism and public opposition to mining in Europe. The solutions taken includes Robominers which requires use of robots for mining – invisible mining. This technology has alot of benefits such as reducing environmental impacts, less costs, safer mining and less waste rock. (The Robominers is also an international development project in which the Miskolc University takes active part).

After all, Yasir has earned 4 TEKH credits for his participation and interesting reports.
